Eat a Rainbow of Foods

Saturday, August 1st, 2009

If the old axiom “you are what you eat” is right, then why not eat a vibrant assortment of foods? Our eye is naturally attracted to deep green of landscapes and the rich red of roses, then why do we eat a mottled gray colored diet? French fries, hamburger, and an artificially flavored drink. Oh they try to spice it up a little bit, throwing in a flimsy slice of tomato or a sorry excuse for lettuce,  but overall a gray and brown meal—how exciting. We eat this stuff because it tastes good. However, its taste is artificially altered because chemicals are added which can cause addiction and cravings, also it tastes good because it is loaded with as much fat, salt, and sugar as they can manage. A test to discover if what you are eating is truly good can often be based on color.

Vivacious and natural reds, blues, greens, and yellows can indicate an abundance of nutrients within. Perhaps it comes from evolution. Maybe the ancients ate the foods that attracted their eye and in time human bodies developed a need for their nutrients. Maybe in 4,000 years our bodies will be able to survive off fat and sugar and artificial chemicals alone. But don’t hold your breath.

For whatever reason, our bodies need an assortment of vitamins and minerals to perform all functions. Each nutrient has specific tasks within the body, and without them problems arise. Colorful fruit and vegetables are known for their density of nutrients.

Dark green vegetables are infused with antioxidants which destroy dangerous free radicals that enter our body through the air and environmental agents. They are also brimming with vitamins A, C, and K, folate, iron, calcium, and fiber. Some of the best dark green foods include spinach, broccoli, and romaine lettuce.

Red colored plants have an important nutrient named lycopene. Lycopene is one of the top ten anticancer carotenoids (or the pigments that create color in plants). Good red foods are things like raspberries, cherries, beets, strawberries, and tomatoes.

Blue or dark purple plant foods such as blueberries, blackberries, grapes, or plums also have anticancer qualities. They contain a pigment called anthocyanin as well as vitamin C, fiber, flavonoids, and antioxidants.

Orange and yellow foods are very unique in their properties. These types of foods actually reduce the effects of aging. They promote healthy eyes, joints, and work with calcium to create strong bones. So make sure to have a variety of apricots, carrots, peaches, pumpkin, and sweet potatoes to your diet.

Also look for white (mushrooms, onions), pink (grapefruit), black (black beans), and dark red (kidney beans) colors.

Filling your life with all these colorful, tasty fruits and vegetables will spice up your life in a healthy way. Even with all this smart eating, we sometimes miss out on needed nutrients, because let’s face it, it’s hard to fit in all these colors and the other food groups (also important, don’t forget about them!) on a daily basis. So add a daily multivitamin to your day to make sure all your bases are covered. Eating healthy is the best way to get vitamins and minerals, but supplementing good eating with a multivitamin is the best way to go. Spice up your life and make your body happy by making smart, exciting choices about what you eat.

Organic GoJi Berries – A Wolf Of A Berry!

Friday, July 31st, 2009

Happy Friday morning from www.FloridaHerbHouse.com and www.SharpWebLabs.com!!  It is a rainy, rainy, day here in central Florida so what better time to discuss one of our best selling berries, the “Goji Berry”. First lets get the misconceptions off the table. For all those sites claiming the “Ultimate Miracle” from their magic goji please beware. As the goji does in fact have some fascinating nutrients which we will discuss here one should not be mislead by false claims from people just looking for the quick sale. Also note for the best health benefits from the gojiberry one should purchase the berries whole and organic if at all possible as opposed to the much publized ready to drink and mostly diluted goji juices. Many of these juices are diluted and contain non organic goji berries which may have been subjected to pesticides and other fertilizers.

The scientific name for goji berry also known as “wolfberry” is Lycium barbarum, and the popularly used name “goji” from the common Chinese name for the berry. Some claim there are two forms of the berry namely Lycium barbarum and Lycium chinense, whose fruit is called the goji berry; other sites insist there is only one species, Lycium barbarum. Claims for more than one or two species may be just marketing ploys. The exact origin of the goji plant is unknown, and although goji berries are reportedly grown in several different areas of the world, any goji berries you purchase will most likely come from China, where the berry has been used in traditional herbal medicine for about two thousand years.

The goji berry has been used as a medicinal food for thousands of years, and has been studied extensively in modern times for its health benefits. With over 15% protein, 21 essential minerals, 18 amino acids, and one of the highest amounts of beta carotene, the goji berry is a nutrient-dense superfood in a class all its own. Perhaps the most important nutrient in goji berries though is its polysaccharides, most notably the lycium barbarum polysaccharides (LBP). Studies show that LBP polysaccharides are exceptional sources of the essential cell sugars necessary for proper immune function and inter cellular communication. These polysaccharides can enhance health in a variety of ways, including helping cancer patients rebuild their natural defenses, improving DNA restoration and repair, and maintaining normal cell growth; and they may help slow the aging process.

Try a small handful of goji berries in your health drink, on your salad, in your tea, in your muffins or pies, or included in any drink/food recipe! See for yourself how much better you will feel after 2 weeks of using these amazing berries on a daily basis!

Foods That Naturally Lower Cholesterol

Friday, July 31st, 2009

Today’s lifestyle makes it difficult to take the time to care for the health of your body, with schedules and deadlines putting stress levels over the top, the last thing we want to think about is whether or not we are putting the right things into our bodies.

Cholesterol is one of the leading causes of heart attack, and high cholesterol often gets overlooked or ignored merely causing the problem to worsen. There are many different medications available on the market to help lower and control the levels of cholesterol, but unfortunately these “easy fix” medications bring with them a host of side effects that are often times much worse than the effects of the cholesterol.

To avoid the potential problems that cholesterol medications can cause many people have discovered that by simply including an assortment of cholesterol friendly foods one may be able to lower cholesterol levels safely and naturally. Some of the foods for cholesterol include oatmeal, olive oil, and fish, these heart healthy foods can safely and effectively help to lower what is known as “bad” cholesterol, or LDL.

Of course there is no substitute for regular exercise, and a healthy lifestyle that excludes heavy drinking and smoking. Recently it was discovered that there are some natural products on the market that are able to actually lower the absorption of cholesterol.

Flora Pro-active, an all natural product that contains healthy plant sterols and an abundance of unsaturated fats, effectively controls the absorption of cholesterol in the body, the effects are twice that of eating 3 bowls of oatmeal a day, and produce 10 times that of the effect of olive oil.

In just 3 weeks time, with the introduction of cholesterol lowering foods, such as plant sterol produced margarine to your system, your body can lower its cholesterol absorption by at least 10%, and an additional 5% with a healthier diet. You should avoid saturated fats and trans fats when at all possible. One way of achieving this is to use margarine spreads instead of butter or margarine when cooking or to add flavour to dishes.

It only takes 25g of Flora Pro-active Margarine spread daily to achieve your goal of lowering your cholesterol and with the choices available that amount is easy to achieve. These products are enriched with plant sterols that not only help to prevent the absorption of cholesterols in the body, but also help to prevent re-absorption, this process is vital to keep your cholesterol levels within a safe range once you have lowered them.

The benefits of lowering of your cholesterol levels include a greater chance for a longer, more productive life, as well as reducing the risk of heart attack. An average healthy persons’ total cholesterol level is below 5.5mmol / L. People at a higher risk, including those who are overweight, have a history of heart related problems, or who fail to keep active regularly, should keep their level around 4.0mmol/L or less.

Will Drinking Milk Help You Live Longer?

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009

There are plenty of people (I’m not one of them) practicing or believing in alternative health who think that drinking milk is simply bad to the bone.  A new meta-analysis from 324 milk-related studies by European researchers concludes that regular milk drinking may reduce the chances of dying from illnesses such as coronary heart disease (CHD) and stroke by up to 15-20 %.

Milk is not for everyone.  Some are allergic to it.  Some are lactose intolerant.  Some get too much mucous from consuming it.  Some simply don’t like it.  However, painting it as an evil food that should be avoided if you want to be healthy is not supported by human science.

I personally think that skim and 1% milk should be avoided, as the increased concentration of milk proteins may lead to increased risk for allergy.  Ideally, you would get milk from cows that are allowed to graze in pastures so that the omega 3 content of the milk is increased.  There is a milk quality issue in our country based on fast food agribusiness.  So it does pay to drink better quality organic milk as much as possible when you have the choice.

There are many bioactive factors in milk that are very good for your immune system.  Lactose as a form of sugar is not nearly as glycemic in nature as other simple sugars.  The cholesterol content in milk has been incorrectly villified.  The calcium in milk is protective to your digestive tract and good for bones, as well as a helper to your metabolism.

Most of the people promoting the anti-milk rhetoric in alternative health have personal problems consuming milk.  That does not mean that their personal shortcomings are science for everyone.  I could tell you something wrong with any food.  Keep in mind – we must eat.

The conclusion of this study is that on the whole, milk consumption as part of your diet is associated with less mortality.

Food for the Brain

Tuesday, July 14th, 2009

In a world where tons of foods are available in the market, we wonder how come we still end up with so many illnesses, many of which are life threatening and fatal. I’m sure you all know the general answer to this. A while ago, I just read an article that fast food can cause Alzheimer’s later on in life. I’ve also read about the top 5 cancer causing food. To wit: hotdogs, bacon, donuts, fries, chips/cookies. Many of our modern day food are cancerous. Thus, it is about time that we go back to the basics.

On this post, we will focus more on those foods that feed the brain and help increase its power and abilities. Some of the famous ones are:

-       Right amount of caffeine (1 cup of coffee a day is enough)

-       Gingko Biloba

-       Fish – rich in omega 3 fatty acids that hinder that blockage of in your blood vessels. When your blood vessels are free from fats and cholesterol, blood flows freely, bring more oxygen to the brain and therefore fuels your brain to work better. Eat fish at least twice a week to help lower cholesterol for better brain power. If you are one of those people who dislike the taste of fish, better take an omega 3 fatty acid supplement.

However, these are not the only ones that do a good job in being able to boost your IQ.

The following are some more examples of brain foods. I call them brain foods because they enhance your brain function, makes you think more clearly, improves your memory and helps sharpen your thinking and processing skills.  They are: Yogurt, Wheat germ, Turkey, Tuna, Spinach, Soybeans, Salmon, Romaine lettuce, Potatoes, Peas, Peanut butter, Oranges, Oatmeal, Milk, Legumes, Flaxseed oil, Eggs, Collard greens, Chicken, Cheese, Cantaloupe, Brussels sprouts, Brown rice, Broccoli, Brewer’s yeast, Lean Beef, Bananas, and Avocados.

These foods have low glycemic index (GI) and are therefore considered healthy. This means that they help slow down the sugar distribution in your blood stream. Fruits, even when sweet, have low GI. They prevent one from having “sugar rush” and “sugar crash”.  Whole fruits have a lot lower GI as compared to their juices because their natural fiber aides in further slowing down the absorption of fruit sugar. Examples of these fruits are grapes, oranges, cherries, apples and grapefruits.

Other kinds of foods low in GI are grains, cereals, and bran. Spaghetti and rice are okay too. They have relatively low GIs as compared to white bread, white flour products and sugar-coated cereals like that of Kelloggs. Foods with higher GI release sugar a lot faster into the blood stream causing the so-called “sugar rush” and minutes after that follows the “sugar crash”. This makes you feel lethargic and sluggish. It will prevent you from working well on your mental tasks or those tasks that involve a great amount of thinking.

Here are some more brain foods that you should take note of:

Vegetables, for those of you who are still not in the know, contain the lowest levels of GI. They are the green leafy vegetables, soybeans, kidney beans, lentils, and chick peas. Potatoes and carrots on the other hand have higher levels of GI so take them in moderation.

Milk and dairy products, you might be surprised to find, have lower levels of GI than fruit but a bit higher than those of legumes. But they’re still considered as brain foods.

Proteins are also good for your brain. They release amino acids that help improve brain power. Tryptophan and tyrosine are two of the amino acids that are considered as the building blocks of neurotransmitters. These neurotransmitters serve as the carriers of signals  from one brain cell to another. When they are properly fed with these amino acids, they transmit messages a lot faster and better.

Now that you know the right kinds of food for you, you must also be conscious of the way you eat them because this also has an effect on the way your brain and your body will process and digest these foods. For instance, if you eat legumes first then consume sugary food after, the legumes will prevent the fast absorption of sugar into your system. Ice cream and fats do the same thing as opposed to having low fat yogurt with sugary fruit. One  more thing to take note of is to not burn or overcook your starchy foods because doing so will cause them to become pre-digested and as such will quickly release sugar into the bloodstream once ingested.

Healthy foods to eat

Thursday, June 4th, 2009

In the past decades, people have become aware of their healthy habits, especially eating habits. As we known, much of the foods we eat are not good for our health. The processed foods harm our stomach that we can never imagine. In this circumstance, people who want to live a healthy life put their interest in the natural healthy foods which don’t contain chemical additives.

There are some natural foods in our daily life such as vegetables, fruits and grains which have been grown naturally without the affection by chemical fertilizers. It is rich in organic matter and provides with essential vitamins and minerals which your body need very much. Those foods from the commercial farming areas focus on the amount of the product, not the quality of the foods. So, it is not strange for the people eat these foods lack of vitamins and minerals. On the other hand, natural food includes poultries which was fed in healthy pastures. These animals live crowded together in one building and are fed on food which is little better than rubbish are not natural food. It’s a far cry than healthy food.

To live a healthy life, you have to eat healthy food. To eat healthy food, you have to have a healthy habit. There are other aspects of healthy eating. You should receive advice from the experts on diet. When people comes the issue of sugar, some person think that the sugar is not a healthy food for it makes people fat. The others think that it provides the essential energy which people need in the daily life. However, the diet experts will suggest you to use the sugar alternative such as honey. Of course, it’s a good way to use the honey to sweeten food if it is necessary. Honey is absolutely a natural food.
